Contemporary jewellery designers to the rescue in this Southeast Asian heat

Dear Reader, 

The little things in life have caught our eye this month. A recent obsession has been assembling the perfect jewellery stack, to go with the cotton basics we have stuck to in the sweltering heat of July. Here is our report on the jewellery brands we’ve been obsessed with.

RUANG is a Bali-based jewellery brand inspired by unique vintage pieces and traditional Balinese silversmithing techniques. The studio engages local craftsmen, and each piece takes  two to three weeks to complete by hand. The brand’s made-to-order model reduces unwanted waste and overproduction.

We are no strangers to Pattaraphan’s great selection of genderless jewellery, having visited their uber chic pale pink flagship store in Bangkok. The team is still abuzz over their ‘Remnants' series of bracelets and necklaces with bone-shaped links. Pattaraphan’s signature style adds a masculine touch to traditional jewellery, making them a good go-to for edgier, contemporary designs.

A recent discovery for us at Singapore’s Public Garden event, a twice-a-year market hosting independent brands from around the region, is Rumme from Jakarta. Although new to us, it already has a large following in its home country with their ‘Ribbon’ series in constant restock during the height of last year’s ballet-core trend. The finely-shaped ribbons bring to mind words like “darling” and “sweet”. However, not to be pigeon-holed to dainty designs, Rumme also offers a range of intricately detailed sets that are popular amongst brides-to-be looking for affordable adornments with old-soul romance.

Singapore jewellery designer Denise Chong is known for her slightly risqué designs such as the popular Calla Lily necklace and sassy beaded bags. Her latest creations have become more ambitious with full-length body pieces made out of beads, chains and semi-precious stones. Denise Chong Adornments is also open to custom pieces, which makes for a great custom-made experience.
