Karyn Lim
What is your full name?
Karyn Lim
What is your first name?
Karyn.
Where were you born?
Singapore.
Where do you currently reside and work?
Singapore.
What is your educational background?
I hold an MAS in Design for Luxury and Craftsmanship from University of Art and Design Lausanne (ÉCAL) in Switzerland and a BA(Hons) in Industrial Design from National University of Singapore.
How would you describe your practice?
As an industrial designer based in Singapore, I experiment across a variety of materials and create in collaboration with brands and craftspeople. Studio Karyn Lim has launched products ranging from objects, furniture, clothing, and accessories.
What are the highlight projects in your career so far?
My first international exhibition was at the Triennale di Milano during Milan Design Week 2015. The show, titled ‘The Alchemists’, was produced by Yoichi Nakamuta and P.C.Ee of IndustryPlus and co-curated by Patrick Chia and Stefano Casciani.
More recently, in 2023, I participated in SaloneSatellite, curated by Marva Griffin, at the Salone del Mobile during Milan Design Week. I exhibited 'So Plast!c', a series of small tables and vessels made from post-consumer plastic waste.
Creating art with generative AI was something I never expected to do. In 2023, I designed a conceptual luxury resort using generative AI for Tatler Homes Singapore, and my piece was featured on the cover of that issue. One thing led to another, and I was invited to speak about working with generative AI at a hospitality interior design event.
What are you currently working on?
I am always working on new designs and am open to potential collaborations with brands and craftspeople. In addition to furniture and objects, I have also been designing accessories for the human body.
