‘Through the Grapevine’ is a monthly round-up of fashion events in Southeast Asia, from collection launches to exhibitions, showcases, pop-ups, and more.

From new collection drops that redefine power dressing, pop-up stores featuring vegan leather footwear to weekend markets, here’s a look at a few fashion events taking place in August and September.

Pekalongan, Central Java

Sejauh Mata Memandang launches Studio Sejauh, a collaborative space in Pekalongan, Central Java, designed to bring together key players in the fashion industry, from artisans and farmers to emerging business owners. Rooted in their anchoring principles of circularity, through their lineup of initiatives, the studio invites an open exchange on responsible supply chains and production systems to empower local craftspeople and foster industry-wide collaboration. 

KRATON x Tulola
‘The Dancer’ for Kawan Nusantara 
24 to 25 August 2024
The Dharmawangsa Hotel, Jakarta

KRATON by Auguste Soesastro, together with Tulola Jewelry, explores Indonesia's rich craft and cultural heritage through their collaboration collection. Presented at the Kawan Nusantara event at The Dharmawangsa Hotel from 24 to 25 August, the collection features five unique pieces, each drawing inspiration from the traditional dances of Nusantara, including Tari Janger from Bali and  the expressive Tari Saman from Aceh.

‘An Ode to Second Chances’

RAD Beaute, Como Park, Jakarta

Lua Reworked by Rethread, a collaboration between vintage archive brand Lua Archives, and Rethread, which specialises in garment after-care and repair, enters its third year with ‘An Ode to Second Chances’. The collection revives vintage garments—blazers, vests, shirts, and trousers—through reconstruction and hand embroidery, embracing the brands’ intent to prolong a garment’s lifespan through personalisation. The limited-edition collection was showcased in a pop-up event at RAD Beaute, Como Park Kemang, from 30 to 31 August.

‘The Power Edit’ Collection Launch

SukkhaCitta reimagines power dressing for the modern women with a collection of tailored vests, kebayas, and structured pants. Upholding their dedication to sustainable craftsmanship, the collection features their handwoven eucalyptus-cotton blend, finished with their iconic indigo dye and hand-loomed touches.

’TANGAN Essentials’ Line Launch

TANGAN introduces a new signature line, TANGAN Essentials, featuring classic silhouettes in the form of high-collared unisex blazer, asymmetric shirts, and flare pants for chic workwear, all imprinted with TANGAN’s signature tailored and deconstructed approach with raw finishes. 

Sonderlab at Wijaya Car Trunk Market
31 August to 1 September, 7 to 8 September 2024
Grand Wijaya Center Blok A-B, Jakarta

Over two weekends, Sonderlab is launching its biggest sale of the year at Wijaya Car Trunk Market in Grand Wijaya Center. International brands include Acne Studios, A.P.C., Mankind, Carhartt WIP and Toga. They will be shown alongside sample and prototype items from local brands including Aesthetic Pleasure and Studio Moral.


Philippines

Purveyr Fair
7 to 8 September 2024
Metrotent Convention Center, Pasig City

Celebrating the vibrant creative pulse of the Philippines, the annual Purveyr Fair gathers talents from fashion, art, graphic design, and publishing. This year’s highlights include standout local fashion brands like Andante’s leather pumps and woven mules, HA.MU’s playful puffy tulle creations, and SUOT’s one-size-fits-all collection. The Purveyr Fair will run from 7 to 8 September at the Metrotent Convention Center in Pasig City.

Brave Shoes Pop-up at Siam Discovery
1 August to 15 September 2024
Siam Discovery, Bangkok

Bangkok-based footwear brand Brave Shoes brings over their collection to a pop-up store at Siam Discovery. Experimenting with deadstock fabric, including leather made of fruit peels, as well as recycled heels sourced across factories in Thailand, their line-up features the newly-released square-toed Billy slip-ons, adorned with hand-stitched embroidery, the Otis Upcyde made of lime peel leather, and the slingback Obi sandals with a rounded toe piece embellishment, made using repurposed cut-off from their Otis Mules.
