Let’s Get Into Digital is a monthly compilation of fashion events that exist in the digital space. Unbound by locale, these round-ups highlight virtual exhibitions, webinars and talks as well as digital resources.

WCC International workshop series 2021
In its second edition this year, the World Crafts Council AISBL (WCC) presents a series of webinars delving into the contemporary issues that craft practitioners face. The International Workshop Series invites craft experts from around the world to speak on issues such as sustainability, digitisation, regional statistics and more. Organisers Rosy Greenlees, former WCC President, and Dr Joseph Lo, Southeast Asian craft expert from the British Council, seek to facilitate practitioners with the knowledge and tools to sustain their practice in the midst of rapid digital change.

Slow Factory Foundation x Vestiaire Collective Open Edu Summer Camp
Slow Factory Foundation is a public service organisation dedicated to climate positivity through circular design and material innovation. From 6 to 27 August, Slow Factory Foundation is partnering with Vestiaire Collective, the global pre-loved fashion platform, to conduct a series of three courses centred around the importance of sustainable fashion. The programme will be held over Zoom in an open-class format where participants can go live with experts to ask questions directly over the discussion topics, such as fast fashion and the culture of disposability.

Design Orchard Heritage Festival Talks
Organised by the Textile and Fashion Federation (TaFF) in Singapore, the Design Orchard Heritage Festival Talks aims to elicit anecdotes and knowledge surrounding batiks and kebayas from the far corners of the Indonesian archipelago. Their first talk titled ‘In Conversation with Peter Lee’ will see former journalist Cynthia Wee-Hoefer speaking to Lee, a curator and scholar of Peranakan fashion, about his search for batik and kebaya throughout Indonesia. In ‘Batik: The Art That Binds’, batik collector Daniel Tendean will give a presentation about the textile’s history, locale, and design applications.

Made in Singapore: Styling the Nation
Made in Singapore is a virtual event series celebrating local tech, fashion, food, and all social initiatives taking Singapore culture to the global stage. In a webinar co-organised by TaFF, fashion practitioners Ify Ubby, Jon Max Goh, Maddy Barber, and Tingzhi Liu will talk about how they have navigated their careers. Moderated by Leonard Choo from TaFF, the talk seeks to provide a forecast into fashion in the digital world, the challenges facing local brands, and hypercompetition within the industry.

‘Sustainability: Fashion’s Most Overused Word?’ Podcast Episode
E-retailer Zalora launched its first podcast series, ‘ZALORA Talks’ in May, hosted by Amy Yasmine, former editor of Harper’s BAZAAR Malaysia. The first season of ZALORA Talks has six episodes, gathering industry experts, brand partners, and fashion and lifestyle Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs) covering topics from female empowerment to wellness. The second episode of the series features guest speakers Natalie Prabha, model and activist, and Yumika Hoskin, presenter and sustainability advocate, in conversation about greenwashing in the fashion industry and concerns of privilege surrounding the sustainable fashion movement.

MADAKA: Virtual Graduation Show Exhibition 2020/2021
LaSalle College Jakarta’s 2020 and 2021 graduates presented a joint virtual graduation exhibition and webinar series from 30 July to 1 August. The showcase’s theme is Madaka, a noble motif in jewellery from the island of Sumba in Indonesia. Students from the Fashion Design programme also put up a virtual fashion show, displaying their graduate collections, including garments with traditional Sumbanese fabrics and weaving motifs in keeping with the Madaka theme.
