Occasional Obsessions #01

The monthly column on sartorial matters
Presented by MFYG (Magazine for Young Girls)

Dear Reader,

Welcome to the beginning of 2024 and to FAM's new monthly column, Occasional Obsessions, presented by MYFG (Magazine for Young Girls). We invite you into our incessantly chattering mind-hive full of online wants and wishes. A result of countless hours on the internet searching for the next thing to covet!

The past few months have been full of discoveries in Southeast Asia as the world opened itself up to more physical travel. Here are some things that we predict will become full-blown obsessions in 2024.

Nalinchan Studio’s iconic “The Future Is Ladyboy” tee has become a must-buy whenever anyone travels to Bangkok. Plus this unisex belted trouser is truly delicious. Available for purchase at @nalinchanstudio on Instagram.

Grofe’s Zippy Tie Bags are incredible, with one floral iteration trumping the last. It seems, from close internet monitoring, that Nalin and Grofe are great friends. The humour that shows through their work is a shared sensibility. I would like to have every single one of these bags. It’s giving tongue-in-cheek Prada, it’s giving beauty, it's giving unexpected elegance. It is the perfect size for bringing a packed lunch to work or to complement a wedding outfit. Available to pre-order on the IWANNABANGKOK online store.

The thing we actually bought

This reversed zipper hoodie from Vietnamese independent label Ngài, has been my top buy of the year. Since then, two colleagues have bought the hoodie. Something about the crop length combined with the reversed zipper is so satisfying. The placement of the wider-than-usual ribbing along the zipper gives it the perfect balance of designed and casual.

Lastly, two big trends that will last this year:

  1. The pedestrian tank top.

  2. Animal ears as accessories.

Consider this mesh ombre offering by Malaysian designer Shao Fen available in two colours here.

And these Sad Lamb Hats by Pinky Gurl Bali are waterproof and a great accessory for an outdoor rave. Available on their webstore ICANHAREM.COM.

Funnily enough, I can see these two going well together. Catch you next month!

Best,
MFYG
